December 6, 2012:

Higher education administrators from Nigerian universities came to the United States this week to study leadership at Blue Pencil Institute. The three-day program, entitled Strategic Leadership in Higher Education: Reframing Academic Leadership, was held December 3, 4, and 5 at The Mason Inn Conference Center and Hotel on the George Mason University campus in Fairfax. Says Blue Pencil Institute president Dr. Laura Hills, who organized and facilitated the program, “George Mason University was the perfect venue for our program. I wanted our participants to experience an American university campus firsthand while they were studying leadership with us.”

Blue Pencil Institute contracted to provide the program with Training Guide International, an organization that runs a variety of courses and programs in collaboration with more than 50 institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. The organization is also affiliated with more than 200 foreign colleges and universities in 30 different countries. Praise Folaji, Training Guide International’s Secretary-General and CEO, wanted to bring his program to the greater Washington, DC area and to work with Blue Pencil Institute, Dr. Hills says.

Six guest speakers presented programs over  three days on  a variety of topics that included innovation in higher education, the Law of Attraction, the American community college system, using the Simple Intelligence model in leadership, overcoming failure, everyday leadership, and how being introverted or extraverted affects leadership. The guest speakers were administrators from institutions of higher learning in the United States, leadership coaches, authors, and trainers. Says Dr. Hills of the program’s faculty, “I was extremely fortunate to engage such excellent speakers for our program. They made the experience fun, engaging, and hands-on.”

Participants enjoyed many features of the program, including:

  • A welcome bag and packet
  • A complimentary autographed copy of Dr. Hills’ book, Climbing Out of a Rut: Four Steps and 101 Secrets to Supercharging Your Career and Finding Greater Fulfillment and Reward in What You Do Every Day
  • A hardcover text entitled Reframing Academic Leadership by Lee Bolman and Joan Gallos
  • Program materials including more than 50 pages of outlines, articles, additional resources
  • Breakfast, lunch, and refreshments each day of the program
